Bed & Breakfast of the Champagne Route

Our old stone farmhouse hugs the hillside above Reuilly, a tiny village on the border of the Picardy and Champagne regions, an hour east of Paris. We overlook the Marne River valley and miles of Champagne vineyards. This is a rolling, scenic countryside, rich in history, between Château-Thierry and the cathedral town of Reims (Rheims in English).

Among bed and breakfasts in France few could be better located - between England, Belgium, Germany and the Paris region - for travelers wishing to discover this crossroads of European culture, or just passing through en route to Brittany, Spain or Provence.

Hundreds of acres of woods and trails behind the house or along the Marne River are yours for walking, as well as a private courtyard for relaxing and our heated indoor swimming pool with Jacuzzi and adjustable swim current to stay in form or loosen up tight muscles after hours in a car or plane like these guests (the champagne helps!) We also have some bikes you are welcome to use (bring your own helmet if you use one). Not to mention ping-pong, darts, a Yamaha Clavinova piano, acoustic guitar, fitness equipment and, up the hill, a tree shaded hammock for two with the view below.

bed and breakfasts in France - view from rearMilitary history buffs recently celebrated the 80th anniversary of the Second Battle of the Marne, turning point of World War One. The terribly evocative cemetery of Belleau Wood is nearby. The American 3rd Division earned its moniker "Rock of the Marne" in July 1918 in the valley below our house, pictured at left with its private courtyard and wood-beamed glass conservatory.

We are close to Paris and offer a central base from which to discover Paris, Picardy and Champagne. Meredith is an architectural historian who will be delighted to point you toward special places to discover in Paris, as well as highlights of our region. Come unwind out here for a few days before taking on the city, or after. Or come to unwind - period! There are lots of places indoors and out, to sit, read and relax such as the conservatory or the living room below. The house is filled with antiques and original art on country themes by contemporary French artists. Living room with original art, country themes

Gourmets will appreciate our champagne producing neighbours like Alain Navarre who account for our being on the "Route Touristique de Champagne",Table d'hote meals as well as the highly regarded restaurant "Auberge le Relais" in Reuilly, awarded a star by the Michelin Red Guide. The nearby "Chez Nanou" restaurant offers country-style meals. Another favorite restaurant is the nearby "Vieux Moulin" where trout is served seven different ways, as well as other dishes, the "Chaumine", "La Fontaine des Fables" and others.

Our four rooms are decorated simply and tastefully. From each you have a view on the courtyard, Meredith's flower, vegetable and herb gardens and the woods beyond. There, as dawn breaks, we occasionally see deer grazing on the hillside meadow, 50 meters from our windows. Each room has its own private and modern sanitary Blue Room with double bedfacilities, with Grohe showers. As to our heated "Endless Pool", bring your swim suit and enjoy its extraordinary adjustable swim current. We include a continental breakfast "plus" with tasty breads, jams, orange juice, yogurts and seasonal fruits.

Daily room rates in 2008 for two persons in a room are 75 euros for one night, 65 euros for 2 to 6 nights and 60 euros for a week or more. Singles are less and an extra single bed with breakfast is 22 euros more per night. We can accommodate up to 10 persons in the following way: two rooms with double beds, one room with two single beds and a "family" room with a double and two single beds. You can reserve, and pay at departure, with Visa or Mastercharge. Please note that we have a minimum stay of two nights if a Saturday is one of your nights. To confirm a reservation we need card details including expiry date and three digit cvc. Normally we debit nothing until departure except in case of late cancellation or "no show".

If you are staying in France for a while and would like to spend some time out here, and some time in Paris we can make available one of our two apartments between the Place de la Bastille and the famous Père Lachaise Cemetery. See Paris apartments for more information and availabilities or e-mail us for more information.

You can reach us on the Internet at frenchbnb@gmail.com, by cellphone with answering capability at +33 (0)6-1324-4616. As we check our email several times a day, even when traveling, we strongly encourage you to send an email message rather than telephoning which is awkward as we are often away from the phone. Our mailing address is simply: "Graham/Sykes, 02850 Reuilly, France." You can find the latest version of this page on the web at http://marneweb.com/bnb/indexeng.htm  Directions: by auto we are easy to find. Coming from Paris leave the Autoroute A4 at Chateau-Thierry exit 20 and follow the National 3 (recently renamed D1003) for about 15 kilometres, direction Dormans and Epernay. Coming from Reims or Metz leave the A4 at the Dormans exit 21 and go 8 kms beyond Dormans toward Chateau-Thierry on the N3. You will recognize our house (photo at top) against the hillside, behind the white obelisk WWI monument, on the N3 in the village of Reuilly. The town is only 300 meters long so slow down or you will whiz past. Although our address is "1 rue des Vaches" (Cow Street!) please do not use your GPS as most likely the 30 meter long path on which we are the only house is not on it.

We look forward to your visit - Meredith Sykes and Bill Graham
